With all this clarity and honest messaging in place, you can start seeing the patterns about your work and its alignment with your purpose.
Now it’s time to think about how you can be THE ONE.
To state who you really are, what you do and what makes you the obvious choice for the people you serve. To make you less (if not at all) interchangeable. The go-to person or business they call at a specific point.
Here’s an exercise done by Joel Pilger: Go from A to THE.
How can you make a claim about what you do that you’re THE only one who can do that?
Instead of “I’m A consultant”, “I’m THE consultant for…”
What makes you so different and unique that when you claim it, it doesn’t sound ridiculous. It actually sounds awesome.
Friend of the list Jonathan Stark said in that same conversation with Joel [starts at 35:39].
- Joel: “Here’s my favorite position hack: […] Kill that little word A and change it to THE.“
- Jonathan: “That’s so funny. It’s funny ’cause I’m doing it to myself. If I was going to say that, I’d say I’m THE Ditching Hourly guy.”
Boom
2 questions to start playing around:
- What’s the space you can claim and nobody else can?
- Are you A (in many) that [fill in the blank] or THE (one) that [fill in the blank]?
