Think for a second your name’s Mikey (from Mikayla or Mike —your choice). Running a small or solo business based on expertise and figuring out how to stand out in your market —or at least how to get noticed.

Here are a few things that make you different from a big, large co, something like… Nike:

  • You don’t have the big (and deep) pockets of Nike.
  • You can’t sustain a large ad campaign throughout different channels.
  • You can’t run ANY large campaign
  • You don’t have a PR agency/team
  • You don’t have the risk of not selling all your inventory and keep it stored
  • You don’t sell high-end commodities
  • You don’t need to serve several markets
  • You don’t have the risk of an aggressive/hostile takeover
  • You don’t have a few millions of sunk costs (stores, brand assets, ads, media bought, market research, etc).
  • You don’t have the bureaucracy/red tape to make decisions and quick, significant changes

You do have something ingrained in your decision-making: agility.

You can move fast. Change fast. Pivot. All this is being quick on your feet: agile.

That’s what can make you stand out. To focus on the right kind of customer problem they want you to solve.

And find creative ways to solve their problems and reach out to them.

You don’t necessarily need ads and media. Or trying to be and act like a big co.

You advantage is in your size.

So, stop copying Nike, dear Mikey.
