The amazing thing about reading a post on free work?

You also being triggered by it and coming with great replies and perspectives on the subject. (Thank you tons!)

This one post shared in a previous email is the thing that triggered me to think about what’s wrong here:

Some of the replies [edited for clarity; shared with permission)

“Asking 1200 people to invest time in something you know will only go to one person is questionable, perhaps unethical.” — Wes Wheless, The Lightbulb.
“… there are usually ethical ways in which you can see someone’s work for free/at a low price to make sure they are the right fit for the job. For example, if the person has written a book about what they do […] will usually tell me everything I need to know.” — Genevieve Hayes, AI & Analytics Expert.

Yes. I do consider it unethical. And exploitative and abusive, too.

The fact that you are famous, a celebrity, or someone who people would LOVE to work for/with doesn’t give you the right to abuse of your position. That’s leadershit, not leadership.

Being in such position gives you the responsibility to show the way to bring this people who see you to a better place. Helping them see their work is valuable (whether or not it’s good enough to what you want is a different story) and how to thrive is on you. That’s leading.

Kevin Rapp wrote this amazing post on more detail, from a different perspective. You can check it out here.

Just one last thing.

If you try people as followers, you’ll get followers.
